Shelsley Walsh, the home of the Midland Automobile Club, has seen many cars take the 1000 yard hillclimb. But perhaps no cars are as synonymous with Shelsley Walsh as Basil Davenport’s ‘Spiders’.

Gracing the MAC stand at the Classic Motor Show 2025 is the second generation, ‘Spider II’. Like its famous predecessor and giant killer of pre-war fame and the first to break the 50 second barrier, Spider II continued Spider I’s philosophy of extracting much from little.

Dusted down in 1946 after WW2 delayed its debut, Basil Davenport continued to campaign this famous car until 1975, achieving a best time of 40.69 seconds at Shelsley Walsh in 1962…

The car was purchased in 1992, being a James Young bodied R-Type saloon, it could be described as a scrap car, as many attempts had been made to restore by previous owners.

During the next four years, it was stripped to its chassis, a modification to the chassis being the first task, in order to give the correct alignment of front wheels and radiator.

At the end of 1996, the car was on the road, and its first Bentley Drivers Club outing was to the Welsh weekend on the 1st May 1997, since then the car has covered 85,000 miles.

The car was built as a unique racing car by Roy Eccles in 1935 to be raced by him and his wife Marjorie. Based on a Lagonda Rapier chassis and 1100cc engine provided directly from Lagonda factory, with a large supercharger and one-off single seater body.

1935 Eccles Lagonda Rapier Special The car remains largely original today, despite a continuous racing history from new, and is in original cream colour from 1935.
